Texas has a favorable climate to all-year long gardening, because of this successive plantings can be used to help gardeners better utilize their space. Successive planting is when a crop is grown in a spot, and then after it is harvested the crop is removed and another crop is planted in its place. Successive plantings can be one of the best options for gardeners who have limited space.
Those who have limited space to place a garden or have small raised beds can often get more crops from successive plantings than planting a few of each crop. Since successive planting uses the same spot for different crops it requires less space than making room for a large amount of different crops to be planted at the same time. An extra benefit that comes from successive plantings are that they allow for gardeners to better meet the needs of the plants they are growing, as gardeners only need to meet the needs of one type of plant at a time rather than several different plants that can have dissimilar needs.
To make the most of successive plantings, gardeners should choose early producing varieties of vegetables that they want to grow. By choosing crops that produce early, gardeners can increase the number of crops that can be grown a year in the same spot.
